iW NEWS | Goldwyn and Red Envelope Scribe for "Trumbo"

Peter Askin's "Trumbo" has been jointly acquired by Samuel Goldwyn Films and Red Envelope Entertainment, the groups announced Thursday. Based on the play "Trumbo," by his son Christopher, the film focuses on Oscar-winning screenwriter Dalton Trumbo and his journey from Hollywood royalty to blacklisted writer to Academy Award winner. The film includes contemporary interviews and features Brian Dennehy, Paul Giamatti and Nathan Lane who performed in the play as well as Joan Allen and Michael Douglas and others. Samuel Goldwyn and Red Envelope, the original content division of NetFlix, plan a Spring 2008 release. Goldwyn's vice president of acquisitions Peter Goldwyn and Red Envelope Entertainment head Liesl Copland negotiated the deal with Andrew Hurwitz of Schreck Rose Dapello Adams & Hurwitz and Cassian Elwes, William Morris Independent on behalf of the filmmakers. "'Trumbo' is a wonderful, personal story about one man's struggle to overcome obstacles and support his family when faced with the tentacles of McCarthyism and the House Un-American Activities Committee which permeated the lives of artists during this time," commented Samuel Goldwyn, Jr. in a statement about the film. ""We are truly pleased to be involved in a project which spotlights the work of one of Hollywood's most influential screenwriters," added Copland. [Brian Brooks]
