The 5th Annual South Asian Film Festival wrapped up this weekend in New York City, with the Grand Jury awarding director Chris Smith's "The Pool" the Best Narrative Feature and Christy Garland and Susan Armstrong's "Doormat" the Best Documentary Feature. "The Pool" is the story of a "room boy" working at hotel in Panjim, Goa, while "Doormat" spotlights a small corner of India where a community holds onto a vanishing way of life. Additionally, the winner of the short film competition was Dipti Gogna's "Narmeen," and Audience Choice Awards were handed out to Jaffar Mahmood's "Shades of Ray" for narrative feature and Joshua Weinstein's "Flying on One Engine" for documentary feature.
