iW NEWS | Slamdance Seeks Pilots in Call for Entries for '08 Fest

Announcing the call for entries for its upcoming 14th annual event, the Slamdance Film Festival (January 17 - 25, 2008) has launched a call for original pilot submissions, along with the regular submissions for new short films. In an email to indieWIRE today, Slamdance's Dan Mirvish acknowledged the changing nature of short films, adding, "It's become clear that more and more filmmakers are making shorts with an eye towards serializing them either on the web and/or on TV. Likewise, the TV and web industry are looking at shorts with increased awareness and trying to spot new ideas and talent. Hopefully, by designating a pilots category of shorts, we'll encourage more filmmakers to submit different kinds of material, and also get a different slice of the industry to focus on these filmmakers." The festival's early deadling is August 27, 2007, while the final deadline is October 9th. Last year the festival received some 3,500 submissions and it will select about 100 to screen at the Park City festival, which runs concurrently with the Sundance Film Festival.
