iW's Project of the Day: Tragedy Brings Sherwin to the Doorsteps of His Inlaws

An image from Maris Curran's "Five Nights in Maine."

Here's your daily dose of an indie film in progress; at the end of the week, you'll have the chance to vote for your favorite.

In the meantime: Is this a movie you’d want to see? Tell us in the comments.

"Five Nights in Maine"

Tweetable Logline:

Unexpected tragedy brings African-American widower face-to-face with his estranged mother-in-law in rural Maine.

Elevator Pitch:

Sherwin and Fiona are at a crossroads. As an interracial couple living in the south, they seem to have created an idyllic bubble for their love. But after a recent visit to her ailing and prickly mother, Fiona is changed. And then, she is gone. After tragically losing Fiona, Sherwin is overwhelmed with grief and guilt. When a call comes from his estranged mother-in-law, Lucinda, inviting him to visit her in Maine, he is shocked, but desperate for answers and hope. Sherwin accepts Lucinda's invitation to the place where Fiona grew up, and embarks on a path toward healing.

Production Team:

Writer/Director: Maris Curran
Producer: Nekisa Cooper
Director of Photography: Bradford Young
Casting Director: Lois Drabkin
Composer: Gingger Shankar
Production Designer: Chad Keith

About the Production:

"The film began with grief, with a sense of loss. But on a deeper level, the film is about the complicated relationships we all have with the people we love – about negotiating and learning from the process of coming home. And it is a film about race. Choosing Sherwin, a dark-skinned African-American man as the lead, a man who is in a biracial relationship and who ends up isolated in rural Maine, elevates personal conflict and tension to have greater importance. Ultimately, Sherwin makes the personal political and elevates the film to be about more than one person’s loss." -- Nekissa Cooper

Current Status:
