Summer might be winding down, but while Hollywood seems to have exhausted its tentpoles, specialty distributors are continuing to pour out hopes for late summer returns. Nine new films will grace arthouse screens this weekend, while one honorary indie - even if its being released through Disney makes it essentially the opposite - joins them in indieWIRE's round up of potential air-conditioned theater options. Among them, Disney's aforementioned release of Hayao Miyazaki's critically acclaimed "Ponyo," Amin Matalqa's 2008 Sundance Audience Award winner "Captain Abu Raed," Li Ying’s controversial “Yasukuni,” Andrea Dresen's touching love story between a 67-year old married woman and a 76-year old man, "Cloud 9," György Pálfi's "Taxidermia," which indieWIRE's Eric Hynes called a "A three-course ordeal of icky sex, Olympian gluttony, and autoerotic dismemberment," Sundance '09 alums like Paul Solet's "Grace" and Robert Stone's "Earth Days," Gerardo Naranjo's "I'm Gonna Explode," which channels new wave cool, and Davis Guggenheim's much anticipated doc "It Might Get Loud," which features rare on-the-road discussions with Jimmy Page, The Edge and Jack White.
Here's links to each release's indieWIRE film page, where you can view trailers, check out reviews, and rate the films yourself. Enjoy:
