"The Leftovers," the HBO pilot based on Tom Perrotta's ("Election") 2011 novel "The Leftovers" about the people left on Earth after the sudden, Rapture-like disappearance of a large chunk of the population, has found its lead.

According to Entertainment Weekly, writer/actor/director Justin Theroux ("Wanderlust") will star in the drama project, which is co-written and executive produced by Perrotta and Damon Lindelof ("Prometheus," "Lost").

Theroux will play Kevin Garvey, the chief of police of Mapleton and a father of two, who's trying keep his life and family together in a world that's falling apart. Per the pilot's official description, "The Rapture happens. But not quite like it’s supposed to. This is the story of the people who didn’t make the cut... and a world that will never be the same." Peter Berg, who's an EP alongside Sarah Aubrey, Albert Berger and Ron Yerxa, will direct the pilot.

An actor who's appeared in everything from "Mulholland Dr." to "Parks and Recreation" (where he played lawyer/Leslie love interest Justin Anderson), Theroux made his directorial debut in 2007 with "Dedication" and is attached to write and direct a sequel to "Zoolander."
