Kickstarter's success rate is 43.89% overall, but broken down by category, only 39.88% of film and video projects have been successfully funded, compared to 55.04% of music projects and 71.33% of dance projects (granted, there were only 1,556 dance projects).
Still, the most popular category (and most successful overall) on Kickstarter is film and video with 30,175 projects launched and $142.83 million raised (on successful projects).
"Most successfully funded projects raise less than $10,000, but a growing number have reached six and even seven figures," according to Kickstarter, which said that currently funding projects that have reached their goals are not included in their current stats -- only projects whose funding is complete.
Of the 11,706 successful film and video projects, 1,121 raised less than $1,000, while the majority (7,132) raised between $1,000 and $9,999; 1,841 raised between $10,000 and $19,999; 1,478 raised between $20,000 and $99,999; 131 raised between $100,000 and $999,000; and 3 raised $1 million or over and, not surprisingly, they were all celebrity-fueled: Zach Braff, "Veronica Mars" and Spike Lee.
Lee just announced that his Kickstarter-funded film "'Da Blood of Jesus," which surpassed its goal of $1.25 million, just finished shooting.
Kickstarter pointed to recent successfully funded film projects which are now available to watch online, including "Detropia," "Indie Game: The Movie," "Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry" and "Room 237."
