The "Long List" for the Orange British Academy Film Awards in 2010 has been released this morning. Tom Hooper's "The King's Speech" and Darren Aronofsky's "Black Swan" led overall mentions with a whopping 15 a piece, including picture, director and screenplay. The films also took a combined nine acting mentions, including five for "Swan" (Natalie Portman, Vincent Cassel, Mila Kunis, Barbara Hershey and Winona Ryder) and four for "Speech" (Colin Firth, Helena Bonham Carter, Guy Pearce and Geoffrey Rush).

Other films that found a considerable presence: David Fincher's "The Social Network," Christopher Nolan's "Inception," David O. Russell's "The Fighter," Joel & Ethan Coen's "True Grit" and Mike Leigh's "Another Year." With respect to the latter two, it's very interesting that "Year"'s Lesley Manville was placed in the supporting actress category, while "Grit"'s Hailee Steinfeld was placed in lead. This goes against their Oscar campaigns.

Overall the list was a generally expected batch, though there were some surprises. While Jacki Weaver was ineligible ("Animal Kingdom"'s UK release was too late to qualify), "Winter's Bone"'s John Hawkes (a SAG nominee) and "Rabbit Hole"'s Dianne Weist were notable acting snubs, as was "The Blind Side"'s Sandra Bullock, who was actually eligible this year. "Winter's Bone"'s Debra Granik didn't make the best director "long list" (while "Alice in Wonderland"'s Tim Burton somehow did) while "Blue Valentine," "The Ghost Writer," and "Rabbit Hole" all got shut out of best picture.

On the flipside, there were many surprise inclusions as well. Besides aforementioned Burton, there were unexpected mentions for Ben Kingsley (supporting actor, "Shutter Island"), Ellen Page (supporting actress, "Inception"), Gemma Arterton (a double mention in actress for "Tamara Drewe" and "The Disappearance Of Alice Creed") and the late Pete Postlethwaite (supporting actor, "The Town").

"The Long List" is the result of Round One voting by members of the Academy. The first round of voting reduces the films down to fifteen in each category. Round Two voting, which opens today, will reduce these fifteen contenders down to the five nominations in each category. The nominations for the Orange British Academy Film Awards in 2010 will be announced on Tuesday January 18th. Over 6000 members of the Academy vote in the three rounds to decide the "long list," nominations and winners.

Below is the entire list of "long lists." Note the five contenders in each category (except best picture) marked with an asterisk indicates the top selections, and the eventual nominees often end up showing one or two variations from those. Some surprise acting contenders to receive asterisks include Julianne Moore, Bob Hoskins, Miranda Richardson and Barbara Hershey, while Nicole Kidman, Hailee Steinfeld, Jennifer Lawrence and Melissa Leo all went sans asterisk.
