L.A. Gains Another Festival, First Glance Goes Bi-Coastal

by Mark Rabinowitz

The FirstGlance: Philadelphia Independent Film and Video Festival has
recently announced a second edition of the three year-old event, this time
in Los Angeles. Set to unspool in September 1998, FirstGlance LA joins the
Los Angeles Independent Film Festival (April), The Hollywood Film Festival
(August) and the AFI Film Festival (October-November) in the already
crowded Los Angeles festival field and will become the first bi-coastal
"underground" competitive film festival.

Both FirstGlance festivals encourage the submission of films with
"low-budgets, mini-budgets, and micro-budgets" in Feature (60 mins. plus),
Narrative (under 60 mins.), Documentary (under 60 mins.), Experimental,
Animation, Music Video and Student categories. In addition, in FirstGlance
Philadelphia, there is a special category entitled Shot in Philadelphia,
for films directed, shot or set in Philadelphia or involving any principal
cast or crew member originally from the Philadelphia area.

[Winners of the FirstGlance fests will be exhibited on both coasts. For
