The Descendants

Alexander Payne's "The Descendants" took top honors at the Los Angeles Film Critics Association's annual awards. This is the third consecutive Payne film to take the group's best picture prize, following "About Schmit" and "Sideways."

The film beat out runner-up "The Tree of Life" for best picture, though that was the only award it won. Terrance Malick took best director, while Michael Fassbender, Jessica Chastain, Christopher Plummer and - most surprisingly - Yun Jung-Hee took acting honors.

The LA critics offered no prizes - runner-up or otherwise - to Michel Hazanavicius's "The Artist," which has been winner prizes from other groups left and right.

Last year, David Fincher's "The Social Network" and Olivier Assayas' "Carlos" both did quite well. Fincher's film took the prize for best picture, best screenplay, best director (where Fincher tied Assayas), and best score (where Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross tied Alexandre Desplat's score from "The Ghost Writer"). "Carlos, meanwhile, tied for best director, won best foreign film, and was runner-up for both best picture and best actor (for Edgar Ramirez).
