"Lebowski" Set to Open Santa Barbara Festival

"Lebowski" Set to Open Santa Barbara Festival

by Tom Cunha and Eugene Hernandez

Joel and Ethan Coen's "The Big Lebowski" will make its sole United States
film festival appearance as the opening night film of the 13th Santa
Barbara Film Festival, organizers announced last night. The movie, which
features Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Julianne Moore, John
Turturro, Flea and Sam Elliott, is the brothers' follow up to their Academy
Award winning 1996 film "Fargo". The announcement, made at a reception in
Santa Monica last night, comes on the heels of the Sundance Film Festival
lineup announcement later this week. A detail clearly on the minds of
organizers.

"Lets hope that we're the alternative to Sundance," Festival Artistic
Director Renee Missel told indieWIRE last night, explaining that she and
Festival Executive Director Diane M. Durst openly welcome movies overlooked
by the popular January festival -- with that in mind, organizers have
extended their submission deadline until December 22nd. Discussing their
plans for the '98 event, the two women assured indieWIRE that they plan to
continue building on previous years success by again creating a high
profile showcase for independent films.

Among the special events set to occur during the ten day festival are the
presentation of the Modern Master Award to actress and filmmaker Jodie
Foster, the Peter Stark Screenwriting Competition, and the 3rd Annual Teen
Digital Competition which will allow high school students to master
software through creating short digital movies.

[The 13th Annual Santa Barbara Film Festival runs March 5 - 15, 1998. For
