Meet the 2012 Sundance Filmmakers #54: Radio Silence, 'V/H/S'

Radio Silence directed one segment of "V/H/S"
A collective called Radio Silence directed one segment of "V/H/S" - the others are Adam Wingard, Glenn McQuaid, David Bruckner, Joe Swanberg, and Ti West - which has a pretty incredible premise. A group of petty criminals is hired to retrieve a rare piece of footage from a house filled with strange VHS tapes, which they must scan through individually. We spoke with Radio Silence about the segment of found footage they directed for the film.

What's it about? In our segment of "V/H/S" (10/31/98), four friends fight for their lives when a Halloween party turns into something truly terrifying.

Radio Silence says: "We're happy the producers took a chance on such an experimental style of storytelling. It was great to be a part of a larger project and be able to watch six different voices merge into a cohesive story.

"Trying to find a fresh take on the "found footage" movie was a big hurdle, we wanted to avoid genre cliches and be sure to only motivate the use of POV through story and characters. Allowing the camera to roll for a reason at all times was something we were very aware of in the writing process and creating a taught story that seemingly plays out in a single shot from one perspective forced us to edit on set as much as possible.

"It'll be the first time for all of us and we're looking forward to seeing some interesting movies and getting a genuine, unfiltered audience reaction to our own."

Indiewire invited Sundance Film Festival directors to tell us about their films, including what inspired them, the challenges they faced and what they're doing next. We'll be publishing their responses leading up to the 2012 festival.
