Having spent the majority of his childhood making movies on home video with his friends, first-time director Josh Boone is more than comfortable behind a camera.
"Movies have been the central obsession of my life for as far back as I can remember," he says. And -- with "Writers" premiering tonight in the Special Presentations section of TIFF 2012 -- it's about time the world saw the end result of Boone's passion, his first directorial debut, shot this past spring.
If film has been - and continues to be - one of the great loves of Boone's life, isn't it fitting, then, that his first film be somewhat autobiographical? (The answer is yes.) And so -- with Boone himself ensuring that his own life experiences inspired him to create "Writers," here is a peek behind-the-scenes.
What the movie is about: Greg Kinnear, Jennifer Connelly, Lily Collins, Kristen Bell and Logan Lerman star in this touching comedy-drama about a successful novelist whose obsession with his ex-wife has sent his perplexed family into a tailspin.
On how the film reflects his personal life: ""Writers" is a perfect snapshot of my heart at the time that I wrote it in the fall of 2009. Although it's fiction, many elements were mined from my teenage years and my parent's divorce. It's about both romantic and familial love."
On working with, well, himself: "As a first time director, I was the biggest challenge. Judy Cairo gave me this opportunity and supported me every step of the way. I think she took the risk because the material was so personal that she really believed I was the best person for the job."
Future projects: "Writing the next film for a handful of actors I became friendly with during the casting of "Writers." Hope to shoot next year. Also developing a feature with Nat Wolff based on a short story we fell in love with."
