Last month, we asked our readers to fill out a brief survey so we can better understand and serve our audience. As an incentive, our friends at Canon U.S.A. provided a Canon XA20 HD professional camcorder to the reader with the most creative idea on how they will use the camera.

Over 2,000 of you responded and after reading your submissions, the editors at Indiewire judged them based on creativity and picked a winner.

We're pleased to announce that Karin Culliton has won the Canon Audience Survey Contest.

"I was very surprised to find out I won the contest, and totally excited. I had to read the email three times to make sure it was real and there was no catch or misunderstanding on my part," Culliton told Indiewire. "There is no way I would be able to afford this camera right now, what with tuition and being a single mom of 2 kids. I can't wait to learn all the ins and outs of it, I've already been watching tutorials on how to use it."

Here is Culliton's winning submission:

I am currently doing my MFA in Documentary Media at Ryerson University in Toronto. Over the next year and a half, I will be working with adolescent burn victims at Sick Kids Hospital. The hospital's expressive art therapist and I will be using art therapy as a tool to help the kids deal with their new challenges. We will be teaching analogue photography, darkroom techniques, cyanotype and any other photography the kids are interested in learning. We intend to hold an exhibition of their completed works next year, as well as create a book which will be sold with profits going to the hospital's burn unit. We also intend to film the entire process and make a documentary out of the footage. I want to teach the kids how to use the camera so they can take turns doing the filming so this project becomes truly collaborative. As kids in a society based on image my hope is to help them learn to feel in control and excited about the image they get to portray of themselves.
