New Films from Michael Winterbottom, James Gray, and Upstart Pictures

>> James F. Gray ("Little Odessa") is currently in production on
"The Yards", a new film that he is making at Miramax. Mark Wahlberg
("Boogie Nights"), Joaquin Phoenix ("To Die For"), James Caan ("The
Godfather
"), Faye Dunaway ("Don Juan DeMarco"), and Ellen Burstyn
("The Spitfire Grill") are among the key cast members. Representatives
for the movie describe it as "a riveting and emotional story about a
crime that blows the whiste on corruption in the Queens subway
business and threatens to tear a friendship and a family apart." The
film was co-written by James Gray and "The Pallbearer" director Matt
Reeves. On tap as producers are Channel Four Film's Paul Webster,
Industry Entertainment's Nick Wechsler, and Kerry Orent ("CopLand"),
who worked with Gray on "Odessa".


>> Toronto-based production company Upstart Pictures, with the
participation of TeleFilm Canada, Space: The Imagination Station, and The
Movie Network
, recently began principle photography on "Top of the
Food Chain
," a science fiction indie comedy starring Campbell Scott
("The Spanish Prisoner") and Fiona Loewi ("Love and Death on Long
Island
"). Directed by John Paizs ("The Big Crimewave"), "Food Chain" is
set in the stagnating town of Exceptional Vista where something has been
eating its townspeople. Equinox will be distributing the film in
Canada, Red Sky Entertainment in English Canada. For worldwide sales,

>> Principal photography has begun on Michael Winterbottom's
("Welcome to Sarajevo") latest "Old New Borrowed Blue". Produced by
Revolution Films in conjunction with Film Four and Miramax Films, the
film stars Christopher Eccleston ("Jude", "Shallow Grave" ), Dervla
Kirwan ("Meteor") and Yvan Attal ("Portraits Chinois", "Love Etc.").
Described as a romantic comedy, the film will be shooting in London,
Liverpool and Northern Ireland. Miramax will be distributing in North
America and Film Four International will handle worldwide sales.
