Warner Independent Pictures' "Good Night, and Good Luck" scooped another specialty box office win in its second weekend in theaters. The film expanded to dozens of additional screens over the weekend, placing first on the iW BOT chart as ranked on a per screen basis, and the feature also grossed the second highest returns for a specialty title overall. Sony Pictures Classics' "Capote" also added sites for its third weekend, ranking second on the chart, while last week's number two, "The Squid and the Whale" from Samuel Goldwyn Films and Sony Pictures Entertainment placed third after adding nearly two dozen venues and the iW BOT's reigning top grosser "A History of Violence" maintained its title, although with a reduced weekend take.

George Clooney's acclaimed Edward R. Murrow period feature "Good Night, and Good Luck" once again claimed membership to the capitalist box office cause with a second weekend $18,305 average from 68 screens, grabbing the premiere position on the indieWIRE box office chart. The film grossed nearly $1.25 million, the second highest total on the chart. During its premiere weekend last week, the film grossed $421,446 on 11 screens averaging $38,313 (52% greater than this week's average).
Sony Classics' "Capote" flipped positions with last week's number two, "The Squid and the Whale," taking the position over the weekend following a small third week expansion. The film, directed by Bennett Miller, grossed $363,876 on 30 screens averaging $12,129. Last week, the film averaged $16,489 on 24 screens, or 26% greater than this week's figure. "Capote"'s three-week cume is now just under $1.43 million.
Noah Baumbach's "The Squid and the Whale" spouted a third place showing over the weekend, adding 23 screens, and grossing $279,938. The feature averaged $10,368, or 68% below its initial average last week on four screens, while its two-week cume stands at $501,232.
Among this week's openers Relentless Co.'s "Quality of Life" debuted on one screen, grossing $5,911, while THINKFilm's "Where the Truth Lies" grossed $37,726 on nine screens ($4,192 average). Magnolia Pictures' "Nine Lives" played seven sites, taking in $28,387 ($4,055 average) and BB Entertainment's "Innocent Voices" opened at 65 locations, grossing $192,055 ($2,955 average). Strand Releasing's "Loggerheads" grossed $10,664 from four sites ($2,666 average) and Kino International's "The President's Last Bang" played three locations, taking in $1,862 ($621 average).
New Line's "A History of Violence" once again secured the highest gross on the chart, taking 44% of the entire specialty share of the box office. The film, directed by David Cronenberg, grossed just over $3.6 million on 1,348 screens, averaging $2,671, or just under 30% below last week's $3,781 average on 1,340 screens. "Violence" has totaled over $22.36 million.
The combined grosses of "A History of Violence," "Good Night, and Good Luck" as well as the chart's third biggest earner, "Proof" from Miramax ($925,061 on 494 screens) represented about 70% of the entire specialty box office's $8.171 million weekend gross on 3,566 screens with 71 films reporting returns. The previous weekend, 76 titles grossed $9.88 million from 4,025 screens, averaging $2,455 or 7% higher than this week's combined iW BOT average of $2,291.
Minus the grosses from "Violence," "Good Night," and "Proof," the chart's remaining 68 films grossed just over $2.4 million on 2,115 screens, averaging $1,135, or 51% below the the current iW BOT average. Industry-wide, 127 films took in about $87.7 million on 41,262 screens, averaging 7% below the overall iW BOT's average.
This coming weekend's openers include New Yorker's "After Innocence," First Look's "Emmanuel's Gift," THINKFilm's "Protocols of Zion," Leisure Time's "Innocence" and "Three of Hearts: A Postmodern Family" (also from THINK). Also opening in limited release are "Ushpizin" from Picturehouse and "The Work and the Glory: American Zion" from Vineyard Distribution.
