NY Film Critics Circle Adds Members
The New York Film Critics Circle added three new members last week,
continuing its reputation as both an indie-friendly and world-renowned
awards organization. Circle Chair Thelma Adams (New York Post) also
released the date for the organization's 63th awards, December 11th. The
official ceremony will be held Januaray 4th and the Rainbow Room in New
York. The Circle does not announce its nominee selections.
Leah Rozen of People Magazine, Lisa Schwarzbaum of Entertainment Weekly,
and Joe Morgenstern of The Wall Street Journal, were added to the existing
25-member roster. Adams also announced Godfrey Cheshire of New York Press
had been elected Vice Chairman.
Almost all the New York daily papers and New York-based national magazines
have members in the Circle, with the exception of the New York Times. The
Times' reporters have historically declined to participate in any awards
voting except those dealing solely with journalism.
In a conversation with indieWIRE, Thelma Adams emphasized the Circle's
historic attention to independent films: "Outside exclusively indie
awards, the New York Film Critics Circle is the best venue for an indie
filmmakers' work to gain recognition."
