NYC Movie Theaters Still Battered by Sandy, But 'Anna Karenina,' 'Iron Fists' + More Events Still On

Well, James Bond could best Goldfinger and Le Chiffre, but not Hurricane Sandy.

The latest high-profile New York City event to be affected by the storm this week and its resultant power outage is the Tribeca Film Institute’s annual fall benefit and fundraiser, which this year includes a special screening of the new Bond film “Skyfall.” Originally scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 1, at the Ziegfeld Theatre, the celebration has been moved to Monday, Nov. 5, because of “operational and logistical challenges caused by Hurricane Sandy” – only now the (unspecified) cast members that were supposed to attend can no longer make the trip. (TFI is making a donation to the Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City for those affected by the storm instead.)

The postponement is just one of many film-related casualties of Sandy, which hit lower Manhattan extremely hard Monday and Tuesday. Theaters downtown remain closed and without power (the Ziegfeld is in Midtown on 54^th St.), and the Tuesday night New York premiere of Focus Features’ new version of “Anna Karenina,” directed by Joe Wright and starring Keira Knightley, at the AMC Lincoln Square 13 on 68^th Street had to be cancelled. With Con Edison declaring that power may not return to lower Manhattan until Saturday, the Quad Cinema remains out of commission.

But for those who can’t live without their cinema fix, Film Society at Lincoln Center's theaters remain open, and as it happens Thursday night’s attraction is none other than Joe Wright. The director is still on to present screenings of both “Atonement” and “Karenina,” followed by an extended conversation with screenwriter Tom Stoppard. The Film Society theaters are also showing Leos Carax’s highly praised “Holy Motors,” the docs “Brooklyn Castle” and “The Revisionaries,” and an Ed Pincus series kicks off there Friday.

Meanwhile, the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens is still committed to its Thursday night screening of “The Man With the Iron Fists,” with co-writer-director RZA appearing in person to discuss his new action film. So don't despair, there are still cinematic reasons to get out of the house.
