ON THE SCENE: Big Bucks as Hamptons Fest Presents Annual Awards

(indieWIRE/10.22.01) -- The Hamptons International Film Festival awarded its
annual Golden Starfish prizes, along with other awards, during a ceremony
hosted by Roger Ebert on Saturday night. Joseph M. Castelo's "American Saint" won the Golden Starfish Fiction Feature award, securing a $180,000
goods and services package. Justine Shapiro, B.Z. Goldberg and Carlos Bolado were presented the Golden Starfish Award for Best Documentary for "Promises" (a $5,000 cash prize). Wonsuk Chin's doc, "E Dreams" was awarded a Special Jury Citation at the ceremony.
The Festival closes today with a day of free screenings for locals, after
organizers sold 20,000 tickets to the 9th annual event.
"American Saint" will now compete for the Perrier "Bubbling Under Award," against four other films hoping to secure the $50,000 grant towards the
director's next movie. Additionally, the movie won the award for Best
Cinematographer offering $6,000 worth of Kodak film stock and the Best
Screenwriter award, a $5,000 prize.
Srdan Vuletic's Bosnian film "Hop, Skip, Jump" won the $25,000 Dan & Ewa
Abraham and Tammy Abraham cash award in the annual Films of Conflict and
Resolution competition. The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Film Prize in Science
and Technology, a $25,000 cash prize was awarded to Michael Apted for the
festival's closing night movie, "Enigma." Notably, Apted announced that he
would donate the entire cash prize to the American Red Cross.
In the event's audience awards competition, Lone Scherfig's Dogme 95 film,
"Italian for Beginners," was the big winner, taking the Best Feature prize.
Meanwhile, Max L. Raab's "Strut" won the Best Documentary award and Birgitte Staermost Mortensen's "Now, Look at Me" won the Best Short Award and Mickey Lemle's "Ram Dass Fierce Grace" won Best View from Long Island.
The award for the $5,000 Golden Starfish Award for Short Film or Video was
shared by the films "Vessel Wrestling" and "Member." [Eugene Hernandez]
