"These are just educated guesses, because this year is one of the most wide-ranging years imaginable. In terms of the Academy Awards, my surprise has been the support for a number of very off-beat choices, such as THE TREE OF LIFE. I admit that i am going by a lot of the guild awards in making my choices (as in the case of the Writers Guild awards for Original Screenplay and Adapted Screenplay).

"In terms of the Spirit Awards, each year is more unpredictable, because the factor of commercial releases is throwing a lot of the choices into very ambiguous territory. I do think that THE ARTIST and MARGIN CALL might prevail in numerous categories, but all that is conjecture on my part.

"Quite frankly: the days when someone like Jem Cohen could win an award at the Independent Spirit Awards are long and, for me, lamentably gone. But i'm glad that this proved to be a lively year, though as we get down to the wire, it does seem a mite predictable. Perhaps there will be some surprises, but there's an increasing sense of consensus each year, which seems to reduce the suspense."
