The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced that seven films remain in competition for the Makeup and Hairstyling category for the 86th Academy Awards, and there were some big surprises.
"The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug" didn't make the cut, despite its predecessor being nominated last year and two of three "Lord of the Rings" movies winning the prize. And the snubs didn't stop there. "Rush," "Oz: The Great and Powerful," "Lee Daniels' The Butler," "Star Trek Into Darkness," "Man of Steel" and "12 Years a Slave" all missed out in favor of surprising inclusions like "Hansel & Gretel Witch Hunters" and "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" (meaning Jeremy Renner and Jennifer Lawrence each have 2 films listed here, as "American Hustle" somewhat expectedly did make the cut). It also appears the frontrunner here might just be... "Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa"?
The films are listed below in alphabetical order:
"Dallas Buyers Club"
"The Great Gatsby"
"Hansel & Gretel Witch Hunters"
"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire"
"Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa"
"The Lone Ranger"
On Saturday, January 11, 2014, all members of the Academy's Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Branch will be invited to view 10-minute excerpts from each of the seven shortlisted films. Following the screenings, members will vote to nominate three films for final Oscar consideration.
The 86th Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on Thursday, January 16, 2014.
