Palm Pictures has acquired two features that screened in both Cannes and Toronto: Michael Haneke's "Le Temps du Loup" (Time of the Wolf) and Lou Ye's "Purple Butterfly." For the Haneke film, starring Isabelle Huppert (who also appeared in Haneke's breakthrough "The Piano Teacher"), Olivier Gourmet ("The Son"), and Beatrice Dalle ("Trouble Every Day"), Palm has U.S. and Carribean rights. The film follows families trying to create new lives in a post-apocalyptic world.

For "Butterfly," Lou Ye's follow-up to "Suzhou River," the company has North American rights only and will release under its Arthouse films banner. "Butterfly" stars Zhang Ziyi ("Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon") in a love story set in the Japanese occupation of China in the 1930s.

Palm said limited theatrical runs, followed by DVD/video releases, are planned for both during 2004. Palm's David Koh, head of acquisitions & production, and Ryan Werner, head of theatrical distribution, negotiated the "Time of the Wolf" deal with Daniela Elstner of Les Films Des Losange. Koh negotiated the "Purple Butterfly" acquisition with Carole Baraton of Wild Bunch.
