"Freedom Fighters"

Tweetable Logline:

There's a new detective agency in Dallas, Texas, started by a group of exonerated men who have all spent decades in prison.

Elevator Pitch:

They call themselves the Freedom Fighters, and they are looking to free innocent people still behind bars. Freedom Fighters is a character-driven documentary that follows these change-makers as they rebuild their lives, learn to investigate cases, work to support each other, and campaign to fix the criminal justice system. We will follow them as they learn the ropes of investigation--following leads, tracking down eyewitnesses and finding evidence that will make a strong case in court--on their first cases. Whatever they discover, we know their sleuthing will shed light on important and interesting issues within the criminal justice system.

Production Team:

Jamie Meltzer- Director (also directed the documentary Informant (2012) which won grand jury prize at DocNYC and is being distributed by Music Box Films)

Kate McLean, Producer
David Alvarado, Producer
Adam Spielberg/Filament Productions - Executive Producer

About the Production:

"A journalist friend called me up and told me about this new detective agency started by exonerees in Dallas, and I was immediately hooked. I loved the idea of approaching the issue of wrongful conviction from a completely fresh vantage point, the exoneree detective agency just seemed like an amazingly novel concept, one of those things that makes perfect sense (who better than them, right?) but also makes one do a double-take and wonder: how is this going to turn out? I've always loved film noir, so this fits into that as well, except translating noir into documentary film form." -- Jamie Meltzer

Current Status:

In production.
