"The Bullfighter: Norm Van Lier"

"The Bullfighter: Norm Van Lier"

Tweetable Logline:

Doc about outspoken and badass 1970s Chicago Bull Norm Van Lier.

Elevator Pitch:

The documentary is about '70s Chicago Bull, Norm Van Lier. My dad was part of the toughest backcourt in NBA history, an outspoken critic of the team he loved, and he lived a hard life with many disappointments. He never won an NBA championship, he never coached an NBA team, he never worked officially for the Bulls again…and then he died suddenly at 61 before any of these aspirations were realized. Two years later, we have realized there are many stories yet to be uncovered and we're finally ready to show his fans who he really was.

Production Team:

Directors - Heidi Van Lier, Sean Meredith
Producer - Heidi Van Lier
Cinematographer - Alice Brooks

About the Production:

Everywhere we go in Chicago, people have crazy and outrageous stories about my father, even 2 years later. Sean Meredith and I started talking to his fans, friends, and family, and realized that he lived many lives before he died, and not many people truly knew all his sides. We want to blend the family man, the killer on the court, and the radio and TV badass, with and the lovable Chicago personality so people can finally get the full picture. We've already uncovered stories that made our heads spin, and we're dying to finally tell his story.

I was a fan of Norm Van Lier back to his days on Midland H.S. when I was just 10. I followed his career from St.Francis all the way to his last days playing for the Bucks after a career that started in Cincinnati Royals then to Bulls. He was my idol. I attended a basketball camp after he was drafted by the Bulls before he was traded to Royals back in Beaver County that he ran. I learned more about basketball in those two weeks than any coach who coached me. Brad Davis a long time Dallas Mavs also attended the same camp. Brad was maybe 13 and I was 14. Brad was from near by Monaca PA. Brad coincidently went onto a broadcast career with the Mav's during the same time Norm was on broadcast team for Bulls. Norm played on one of the greatest high teams ever to come out of Pennsylvania. The undefeated 65 Midland H.S. He played with Simmie Hill and Ron Brown. I still to this day have a poster from his playing days with the Bulls and an autographed basketball that he signed after his career.
