Project of the Day: 'Councilwoman Castillo' Cleans Hotel Rooms in the Day

Here's your daily dose of an indie film in progress; at the end of the week, you'll have the chance to vote for your favorite.

In the meantime: Is this a movie you’d want to see? Tell us in the comments.

"Councilwoman Castillo"

Tweetable Logline:

A #documentary about a politician whose day job is cleaning hotel rooms. Now that is a film about our democracy.

Elevator Pitch:

This documentary film is about a City Councilwoman in Providence, RI whose day job is cleaning hotel rooms. It is a film about our democracy, who can participate, and on what terms. How would public policy change if more low-wage workers held public office? What does city government look like from the inside? What is the personal toll of fighting for change? We started following Councilwoman Castillo when she won her election in 2011, and will continue through her reelection campaign of 2014.

Production Team:

Director/Producer - Margo Guernsey
Director of Photography - Nikki Bramley
Additional Camera - Desi Washington, Jenny Alexander

About the Production:

"From the beginning I was inspired by Castillo's decision to run for office, despite all of the challenges  of public life, and by her fighting spirit. The journey begins after winning an election. What does government look like from the inside? How does one implement all the changes that were part of the campaign speeches? I hope this film will start a national conversation. We all complain that we get more of the same out of our politicians, and most of us are not happy about it. How would public policy change if more low-wage workers were elected to office?" -- Margo Guernsey

Current Status:

In production.
