"Flaws in the Child Welfare System"

Tweetable Logline: Documentary following two girls who were wrongfully stuck in foster care for 6 years due to a clerical error. Here's your daily dose of an indie film in progress; at the end of the week, you'll have the chance to vote for your favorite.

Elevator Pitch: This documentary will explore the issues within the United States child welfare system by following two young girls in Chicago who were direct victims of neglect within the system. Stephanie McLean is a school teacher whose mentally ill brother was unable to care for his daughters. When they were taken from their mother, DCFS spelled his name "Darryl" rather than "Daryl." Because of this, his rights as a parent were terminated and the girls were taken. Stephanie fought in court for more than 6 years to gain custody and now she wants her story to be heard.

Production Team:

Director/Cinematographer - Schanne Cade
Producer/Editor - Drew Morris
Camera Operators - Grant Stakenas, Jimmy Murray
Executive Producer - Stephanie McLean/Patrick Stakenas

About the Production: Once I heard Stephanie's story and all the terrible things these girls went through, I knew there was no way I could not make this documentary. I knew that the United States Child Welfare system had issues, but the more research I did, the more it became clear that it was time to do something. We hope our film can help spark change so that more lawsuits are not filed, and more lives are not ruined.

Current Status: In production.
