"Masculinity/Femininity"

Tweetable Logline:

Masculinity/Femininity is an experimental performance based documentary that questions normative notions of gender.

Elevator Pitch:

Shot on Super 8mm film, Masculinity/Femininity presents filmmakers, theorists, and artists of all kinds with a few simple questions about their bodies and adolescence and asks each participant to "perform" (in any way they like) a piece that deals with the issues at the heart of normativity and gender construction.

Each performance is profoundly different but, together, the project acts as a document of gender deconstruction and exploration, questioning the social binary commonly seen as Masculinity/Femininity and combing the work of both academic and practical critique into an experiential documentary that questions everything we think we know about gender.

Production Team:

Director: Russell Sheaffer
Sound: Meredith Heil
Performances by: Barbara Hammer, Monika Treut, M.M. Serra, Linda Williams, B. Ruby Rich, Jack Halberstam, Juan Suarez, Tom Waugh, John Greyson, Amy Villarejo, Yvonne Tasker, Michele Aaron, and Harry Benshoff.

About the Production:

"It all started as a project that combined monologues that James Franco and I wrote and directed. The short that resulted was screened for months as a part of James' solo show The Dangerous Book Four Boys in NY and Berlin and got some great reviews -- including being deemed the "best by far" by the New York Times. Pretty immediately, though, I knew it wasn't finished. There were still so many more people to talk to, so much more to say, and so many more performances to document -- and that's where Masculinity/Femininity comes in." -- Russell Scheaffer

Current Status:

In production.
