Project of the Day: Gay Magician The Amazing Randi Comes Out and Faces the System in 'An Honest Liar'

Here's your daily dose of an indie film in progress; at the end of the week, you'll have the chance to vote for your favorite.

In the meantime: Is this a movie you’d want to see? Tell us in the comments.

"An Honest Liar: The Amazing Randi Story"

Tweetable Logline:

A film about The Amazing Randi that will show how easily our perceptions are fooled – by magicians, con men, and even documentaries.

Elevator Pitch:

An Honest Liar tells the incredible story of famed magician-turned-skeptic and enemy of deception, James “The Amazing” Randi. The film brings to life his elaborate schemes and investigations that famously exposed psychics, faith healers and con artists. Yet after recently coming out of the closet as a gay man, Randi himself now faces the price of a very personal deception that might result in the deportation of his partner of 26 years.

Production Team:

Directors/Producers: Justin Weinstein (Writer/Editor, "Being Elmo"), Tyler Measom ("Sons of Perdition")
Co-Producer: Duane Andersen ("Daylight Savings," "Surrogate Valentine")

About the Production:

"For us, an ex-Mormon- and former-scientist-turned-filmmakers, An Honest Liar is much more than a film about a famous magician-turned-skeptic. The film also follows unfolding personal stories that illuminate fundamental issues of great significance, including marriage equality, education, deception, religion, and the role of science in society and public policy. We believe this documentary about the iconic figure of James "The Amazing Randi" -- filled with humor, a sense of wonder, and compelling personal stories -- is an excellent way to engage an audience on these issues." -- Tyler Measom

Current Status:

Finishing production.
