Project of the Day: 'Havana Motor Club'

Here's your daily dose of an indie film in progress; at the end of the week, you'll have the chance to vote for your favorite.

In the meantime: Is this a movie you’d want to see? Tell us in the comments.

"Havana Motor Club"

Tweetable Logline: "Havana Motor Club" explores Cuba's vibrant drag-racing community & their quest to hold the 1st official car race in Cuba since the Revolution

Elevator Pitch: As Cuba lifts its fifty-year ban on racing, five of its top underground drag racers, longtime friends and rivals, prepare their American classics to compete. The vast changes sweeping Cuba are evident in these drivers’ hopes and struggles, as they gear up for the first official race since the Revolution.

Production Team:

Director, Producer: Bent-Jorgen Perlmutt
Producer, Cinematographer: Zelmira Gainza
Executive Producers: Magnus Andersson, Raja Sethuraman, Dan Cogan
Editors: Armando Croda, Julio Perez IV,Bent-Jorgen Perlmutt
Additional Cinematography: Armando Croda, Ernesto Calzado

Bent-Jorgen Perlmutt Filmography:
CONTROL ROOM (2004) - Co-producer/Additional Editor
LES VULNERABLES (2007) -Writer/Director/Producer
LUMO (2007) - Director/Producer
VALENTINO: THE LAST EMPEROR (2008) - Associate Editor
MAN V. VOLCANO (National Geographic, 2011) - Editor/Field-Producer

About the Production: I want to tell a personal, character-driven story that tackles how Cuba’s recent reforms - the owning of property, allowance of small businesses, and greater exchange between Cubans, Cuban Americans, tourists, and other foreigners - have affected the lives of Cuban drag racers in both positive and negative ways. The film’s observational style will allow my characters to speak for themselves. Through their journeys and the widespread appeal of car racing, I hope to show a large American audience a portrait of Cuba never seen before, which will help normalize relations between the U.S. and Cuba.

Current Status: Fundraising and Post-Production

This film is bound to be extraordinary, I have seen most of Perlmutt's films and was charmed amazed and informed every time. Plus in this case, the filmmaker's commitment to grasp the culture went as far as learning to speak fluent Spanish and to dance Cuban salsa!!! This level of bad-ass work has to be rewarded.
