Here's your daily dose of an indie film in progress; at the end of the week, you'll have the chance to vote for your favorite.

In the meantime: Is this a movie you'd want to see? Tell us in the comments.

"Sharbat"

Tweetable Logline:

A young Indan girl is forced to take a decision that will change her life forever when she discovers her father's plans for the future.

Elevator Pitch:

Imagine Roald Dahl's "Matilda" complete with the themes of education and the importance of family, but set in India and as a drama.

The story begins with the now older titular character Sharbat, getting stranded in a railway station where she had once escaped from and she flashes back to the years leading up to her inevitable departure. We follow Sharbat, an inquisitive and ambitious little girl, in a family where the women are not allowed to be literate. She enlists her mother’s help to learn to read clandestinely, but when she is discovered, has no choice but to escape.

Production Team:

Writer/Director/Producer - Jayesh Hariharan
Director Photography - Praveen Elankumaran
Assistant Director - David Maire
Production Designer - Ella Rooney
Producer - Sayali Joshi

About the Production:

The story was inspired by the Afghan Girl, Sharbat Gula. Steve McCurry, a NATGEO journalist said in a documentary, “We have known her face, but we’ve not known her story,...” That image has fascinated and haunted me ever since.

While visiting few villages in India, I was shocked to learn how difficult it is for little girls to attend school. The motivation behind creating such a movie is to in its humble way enhance the education of girls in India. Even if there was one girl who gets an education because of it, I will consider Sharbat a success.

Current Status:

Fundraising and In Production.
