Here's your daily dose of an indie film in progress; at the end of the week, you'll have the chance to vote for your favorite.

In the meantime: Is this a movie you’d want to see? Tell us in the comments.

Live From Mogadishu

Tweetable Logline: Somali hip hop's journey to help end the war.

Elevator Pitch: Somali rapper Shiine Akhyaar, singer Falis Abdi, and their hiphop group Waayaha Cusub lead a movement to persuade youth in East Africa to turn away from extremism and violence and help end the war. The film follows the ongoing threats the group receives from Al Shabaab terrorists, their dangerous journey back to Somalia and climaxes as they perform and produce the historic Mogadishu Music Festival.

Production Team:

Daniel J Gerstle - Director / Editor / Executive Producer / Cinematographer
Shiine Akhyaar - Executive Producer
Nur Hassan - Producer
Jake Simkin - Producer / Cinematographer
Seth Chase - Cinematographer

About the film: Waayaha Cusub have already overcome huge barriers. Starting out as a collective of Somali refugees in Kenya-surviving shootings, stabbings and other threats by extremists--they have built a ten-year juggernaut of music, live performance and media persuading youth to turn away from extremism. Waayaha Cusub stands as one of the only ideological campaigns reaching youth directly, drawing thousands to their shows and ranking millions in media views. We made this film in Somalia and Kenya primarily for the youth of East Africa, to tell the story of the vast majority of Somalis who believe in peace, family and music.

Current Status: Post-production. We are fundraising for final film costs and to fund the premiere screenings in Somalia and Kenya with youth outreach workshops.
