Project of the Day: Rebel Poet Alice Walker Doc

Alice Walker: Beauty In Truth

Here's your daily dose of an indie film in progress; at the end of the week, you'll have the chance to vote for your favorite.

In the meantime: Is this a movie you’d want to see? Tell us in the comments.

"Alice Walker: Beauty In Truth"

Tweetable Logline:

A compelling story of a rebel poet, writer & human rights activist, Alice Walker.

Elevator Pitch:

"Alice Walker: Beauty In Truth" is a feature documentary film about life and times of American writer, Alice Walker who made history as the first black woman to win a Pulitzer Prize for Literature for her ground breaking novel The Color Purple, made into a successful film by Steven Spielberg.
We all know well-behaved women rarely make history, but what of the rebels and writers, artists and activists who refuse to behave? They are the women who take the risks that change society. Who tells their stories? Alice Walker is one such woman, a risk-taker, a poet, human rights activist and novelist.

Production Team:

Director/Producer: Pratibha Parmar ("Khush")
Producer: Shaheen Haq

Tell Us More:

"Where were the stacks of films on women who have changed history and impacted on contemporary culture? I came to filmmaking from a passionate desire to see stories about women, particularly women of color rarely seen on mainstream television or cinema screens in all our/their complexity and nuance. Where are the in-depth explorations of women as thinkers, public intellectuals, women as history makers, who are inspirational leaders and role models for upcoming generations? Where indeed was a film on Alice Walker who is rightly considered one of 20th Century’s most significant writers? And so started the journey of this film." -- Pratibha Parmar

Current Status:

The film is in post-production with 90% of filming completed.

excellent documentary documenting the life and values of this legendary figure in both the African American and the women's movement for literary truth and social justice.

A film about the life of Alice Walker is wanted and needed and very much relevant today. I was extremely excited to find out she would be involved in producing a film about her life. I know the film will be groundbreaking as her life is.

A combination of feminist filmmaker Pratibha Parmar and Alice Walker, one of the most significant Black women writers - I cannot wait to see the film. And as Pratibha points out where are the the lives and works of Black women? Where are our inspirations, our mirrors? Here we have a film about an extrodinary Black writer and an equally extrodinary Black filmmaker. Thank you both!

I have followed the unparalleled work of Pratibha Parmar for many years and so I am particularly excited about the prospect of seeing this film, considering that it is a labor of love for the director.

I can't wait to see this film. I remember reading The Colour Purple as a young woman and being so drawn in the a depth of female experience. It, along with all Alice Walkers writing and view of the world - is one of the greatest treasures in our time. The pleasure I felt in discovering her work has never left me ... Colour Purple is still one of the top - of the top ten - books I've ever read, along with Marge Piercys' Woman on the Edge of Time. I know the film will do great justice to Alice Walker and will be a beautiful and really important documentation of her life, motivation, work.
