"Refugee Kids: One Small School Takes on the World"
REFUGEE KIDS follows newly arrived students at the International Rescue Committee’s intense, New York-based summer school for children seeking asylum from the world’s most volatile conflicts. This group of over one hundred, wildly diverse kids, ranging in age from four to eighteen are recent refugees from countries in crisis including: Iraq, Tibet, Liberia, Egypt, Bhutan, among others.
This summer they are getting a crash course in living – and going to school – in America. They are also teaching one another and their teachers about courage, community, and overcoming unspeakable adversity. This is a school unlike any other.

It was Technath’s story that really hooked me. Technath, 17, spent his entire life in a rural Nepalese refugee camp - dirt floors, no running water and virtually no English instruction. In his first six months in NY, Technath has orchestrated the family’s move and translated for cardiologists operating on his brother - all the while maintaining straight As.
