Project of the Day: The Authorized Jerry Garcia Documentary

Here's your daily dose of an indie film in progress; at the end of the week, you'll have the chance to vote for your favorite.

In the meantime: Is this a movie you’d want to see? Tell us in the comments.

"Jerry: The Movie"

Tweetable Logline:

Authorized Jerry Garcia Documentary directed by Malcolm Leo based on his unseen 1987 interview with Jerry.

Elevator Pitch:

In the summer of 1987, filmmaker Malcolm Leo sat down with Grateful Dead founding member and cultural hero Jerry Garcia. The occasion was to record a few comments for Rolling Stone Magazine’s twentieth anniversary special, which Leo was producing and directing for ABC Television. It turned into so much more.

Captured on film by Russell Carpenter, Cinematographer of Titanic, the interview presents Garcia discussing his life, music, family and friends. He is brilliant, charming, joyful and free. It’s Jerry Garcia as you have never seen him before. This unseen interview is the starting point for our comprehensive Jerry Garcia documentary.

Production Team:

Director: Malcolm Leo ("This Is Elvis," "Beach Boys, An American Band")
Producers: John Hartmann, Aaron Godfred ("John Dies at the End")
Associate Producer: Gina Podley

About the Production:

"After having done films on Elvis Presley and the Beach Boys and others I felt that there were very few individuals that would capture my attention where I could devote my time and energy to make such a documentary. When I sat down with Jerry I immediately knew that he was such a subject. I'm more excited about the documentary now than ever."  -- Malcolm Leo

Current Status:

Pre-production

Looking forward to this. Really can't believe an official movie/documentary by now. The early Deadheads are not getting any younger. I got on the bus in the 80's and am a huge fan. Seems a lot of greed surrounding Jerry's estate has kept a lot of great stuff in the vault. Hope they get all the stuff out there for us fans. We are here and will eat it up.
