"The Scent of Fish Sauce"

Tweetable Logline: Set to the dark, exotic aromas of fish sauce, this short film follows the romance of a Vietnamese nurse and her young American male patient.

Elevator Pitch: Mai, a Vietnamese nurse, is hired to take care of an injured American man. After turning him on to the secret pleasures of Vietnamese cooking, Mai’s romantic dreams take a strange turn. Employing fish-sauce as a symbol of cultural clash and desire, The Scent of Fish Sauce depicts how two separate, distinctive cultures can harmonize without compromising the essential aspects of each. With a mixture of romance, humor and suspense, told from a uniquely Asian aesthetic perspective, this film is set to be an exotic, sensual and sensational journey of discovery and insight refracted through the lens of cultural difference.

About the Production: From Minh Trinh: 'As a foreigner living in the US, I feel an invisible gap between what I can share and what people can understand. For example, not everyone can accept fish sauce, the most important condiment and a symbol of Vietnamese cuisine. For some Westerners, the smell of it may be too pungent or smelly. When I cook fish sauce in my Austin house, I can tell my housemates feel frustrated sometimes. Inspired by my cooking experience, I wrote The Scent of Fish Sauce.'

Current Status: Post-production
