10 Screenwriters To Watch Variety has compiled its annual list of ten screenwriters to watch. Among them is “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ By Sapphire” scribe Geoffrey Fletcher. “I thought that writing was not only a good way into the industry, but probably a good way to stay there,” Fletcher told Variety, noting he was working as an adjunct professor at Columbia University and NYU when “Precious” director Lee Daniels came to him. The 7th Cine Fest Petrobras Brasil-NY gets underway on Sunday, August 2 at SummerStage in Central Park with a concert by a hot Brazilian singer, Silvia Machete and screening of Brazil’s number one film of the year, “If I Were You 2.” The festival will continue at the Tribeca Cinemas from Monday, August 3 - 7. The American Pavilion, which is a communication and hospitality center for the U.S. at the annual Cannes Film Festival, will screen winners of its Emerging Filmmaker Showcase on Saturday, August 8th. The 7pm screenings and reception will serve as the Closing Night festivities of “The American Pavilion’s L.A. Intensive” program and will take place at the Los Angeles Film School. The four winners (“Freedom to Choose,” best doc; “Heroes of Orange County,” best student doc; “Kolaborator,” best narrative; “Danzik,” best student narrative) will screen with honorable mentions during the event.
