Redford And General Cinemas Go Dancing

by Mark Rabinowitz

GC Companies, Inc., the parent company of General Cinema
Theatres, Inc.
, announced that it has agreed to form a joint venture
with Robert Redford to create Sundance Cinemas, a theatre circuit
dedicated to the exhibition of independent films. In making the
announcement, the company revealed that it plans to open open "a significant
number" of state-of-the-art theaters across the
country in urban, suburban and college locations, increasing the number
of screens dedicated to specialty films. With that increase, Sundance
Cinemas are expected to focus on American independent films, while also
giving playdates to foreign, documentary and avant garde cinema.

In a prepared statement, Redford remarked that "Sundance Cinemas is the
logical extension of our efforts over the past eighteen years to expand
the opportunities for independent filmmakers to reach the broadest
possible audience. I also believe that film-goers are starved for new
ideas, voices and visions." Sundance Cinemas is another in a long line
of pioneering efforts by Redford to expand the scope and exposure of
independent films, including the
Sundance Institute, Sundance filmmakers and screenwriters labs, the
Sundance Channel, and the Sundance Film Festival.

GC Companies currently operates one of the nation's leading motion
picture exhibition circuits -- 1,168 screens at 185 locations in 25
states. It was not announced whether some of these theaters would
be converted to Sundance Cinemas, or how many new theaters would be
built for the indie exhibiting chain.
