RESFEST Sets Slate for 7th Annual Touring Fest
by Eugene Hernandez
The RESFEST tour will kick off next month in San Francisco. The seventh-annual event, which showcases innovative video projects, will travel to 14 cities in seven countries through December. Programmers chose this year's lineup from more than 1,500 short film submissions. Additionally, live music events have been added to this year's tour for the first time.
More than 60 short films will screen at RESFEST in a number of thematic short programs. Among them are "Off the Map," exploring work about geography and "By Design" which includes experimental design films. The two music video programs are the annual Cinema Electronica showcase and "Videos That Rock."
Among the work scheduled to screen at RESFEST is Daft Punk and Leiji Matsumoto's animated musical feature, "Interstella 5555." It debuted earlier this year at Cannes.
The tour will also include a retrospective of music videos by director Michel Gondry as well as a collection of rare work by director Spike Jonze. Gondry, who curated the selection of work, will speak at the tour's New York stop. Jonze will offer a premiere of a new work, "Torrance Rises."
"RESFEST continues to grow in exciting ways, both in terms of programming, with our most eclectic survey of innovative projects and music events ever, and in terms of audience, with screenings in even more venues around the world," said RESFEST festival director Jonathan Wells in a prepared statement. "Our founding vision -- of becoming a truly global festival showcasing the best work by both emerging and established creators -- is definitely embodied in this year's stellar event."
The 2003 RESFEST tour, with multiple day runs in each city, will begin in San Francisco on September 18 and continue in Los Angeles on September 24. In October, the tour will head to Washington D.C. on October 3 and New York City on October 9, hitting Barcelona on October 9 and Bristol, England on October 16. The tour will be in Chicago on November 6, followed by Cape Town, South Africa on November 12, London on November 13, and Seoul, South Korea on November 14. Three stops in Japan will include Tokyo on November 20, Hakata on November 28, and Osaka on December 5. The tour will also be in Melbourne on December 4.
