Reverse Shot's Eric Hynes and filmmaker Andrew Bujalski, talking about "Beeswax."

“I always want to make a film that I feel like no one else is going to make,” filmmaker Andrew Bujalski recently told Reverse Shot’s Eric Hynes in this Reverse Shot Talkie, presented by indieWIRE.

Bujalski, director of “Beeswax,” recently spent some time with Reverse Shot at The Family Jewels, a vintage store on West 23rd St. in Manhattan. Concerning the lives of two sisters (played by twins Tilly and Maggie Hatcher), one of whom works in a vintage clothing store in Austin, ‘Beeswax’ is Bujalski’s third feature, following “Funny Ha Ha” and “Mutual Appreciation.” It debuted earlier this year at the Berlinale, later screening at SXSW.

“This new one about a small business owner, certainly I think a lot of my experience self-distributing the first two films went into that,” Bujalski tells Hynes, admitting that releasing his own work was not something he ever aspired to. “But,” he explained, “I’ve done it because I cared about these projects and I’ve wanted them to have a life and its been worth it to me.”

Reverse Shot Talkies is a series of unconventional, site-specific video interviews with filmmakers, programmers, critics, and more.  Informal, playful, and always revealing, Talkies are not just antidotes to the traditional Q&A format but also unique short films in their own right.
