Oscar-winner Sean Penn will soon be making an action-packed appearance on the big screen now that Open Road Films has acquired all U.S. rights to Pierre Morel's thriller "The Gunman," which stars Penn.

Based on Jean-Patrick Manchette’s novel "The Prone Gunman," the film, which also stars Javier Bardem and Idris Elba, features Penn as a former special forces soldier and military contractor suffering from PTSD, who must go on a cross-continental journey in order to clear his name before reconnecting with his long time love.

"We are thrilled to partner with our friends at Studiocanal, Joel Silver and the entire team behind THE GUNMAN," said Open Roads CEO Tom Ortenberg.  "Sean Penn is certainly one of the most talented actors of our time and it's very exciting to be working with him in this groundbreaking action role as well as with fantastic filmmaker Pierre Morel who brought audiences 'Taken' and the 'Transporter' franchise."
