The Coen brothers' "A Serious Man" has won the International Cinephile Society's award for best film of 2009. Best director and original screenplay kudos also went to the film, described by the ICS as "perhaps their most personal and certainly their most brilliant exploration of the relationship between God and Man."
Other big winners at the awards - which provided a refreshingly eclectic mix of winners - included Michael Haneke's "The White Ribbon," which took runner-up honors for film and director, as well as winning top prizes for Christian Berger's black-and-white cinematography and for best film not in the English language.
Another big ICS winner was "Fantastic Mr. Fox," winning three awards, including best animated film, adapted screenplay by Wes Anderson and Noah Baumbach, and an honor for Nelson Lowry's production design.
Top acting honors went to Colin Firth in "A Single Man" and Tilda Swinton for "Julia," while "Inglourious Basterds"'s Christoph Waltz and "Up In The Air"'s Vera Farmiga took supporting honors.
