SF Chronicle: 11th Berlin & Beyond Festival

By Indiewire | Indiewire January 12, 2006 at 10:28AM

The 11th Berlin & Beyond festival opens Thursday at the Castro [theater] with "Sophie Scholl -- The Final Days," about the World War II-era martyr, and closes Jan. 18 with "Barefoot," a modern-day existentialist comedy. Both are acclaimed films by veteran directors. But within the two dozen other features from Germany, Austria and Switzerland shown in the intervening days are eight movies by first-time filmmakers, and two in particular show radically different views of Berlin by young directors. G. Allen Johnson reports in the San Francisco Chronicle.
