Attention, Stanley Kubrick Fans, Here's How to Use Front Screen Projection

Joey Shanks

Filmmaker Joey Shanks has released his latest experimental/instructional video for fellow DIY filmmakers, and his new video will no doubt delight all of the Stanley Kubrick fans among them.

The video instructs viewers on how to use Front Screen Projection, the technique Kubrick used for the "Dawn of Man" segment of his masterpiece "2001: A Space Odyssey". The effect allows for an extraordinary deep focus that Shanks remarks "you could never achieve if filmed on location." Now largely replaced by Green Screen, it nonetheless remains an impressive technique that gives a far more tactile feeling than its modern counterpart.

Shanks, one of our Movie Lovers We Love, produces a weekly series with PBS Studios that explains how to make various low-budget, high-quality special effects work.

I used this for the flying sequences in my movie THE RETURN OF CAPTAIN INVINCIBLE. Mike Molloy, operator on A CLOCKWORK ORANGE and BARRY LYNDON was my DP. It works great!
