Organizers of the Palm Springs International ShortFest announced Thursday that Shia La Beouf and Matthew Modine will be among the filmmakers unveiling new short films during the fest’s 18th edition. Running from June 19-25at Camelot Theatres, ShortFest will feature 323 shorts from 52 countries, with $118,800 in cash prizes, equipment and potential Oscar consideration at stake for competition films.

Toronto film festival programmer Jane Schoettle, Variety critic Lael Loewenstein and Abramorama president Richard Abramowitz will serve as the ShortFest jury. Winners will be announced Sunday, June 24 at a closing night reception.

The Palm Springs ShortFest will also continue the online film festival it launched last year, during which ten of the selected films will be available online the week before ShortFest begins and then for two months after. Voting will determine an audience award winner for the online fest program.

“Once again this year the festival’s global reach has exceeded our expectations,” said ShortFest film curator Kathleen McInnis. “With well over 50 countries represented, the breadth and depth of storytelling we are seeing defies politics, government-imposed boundaries and oppression to illuminate the collective human condition. The thrill of having so many filmmakers from such varied world cultures attend the festival inspires and reignites our own love of cinema.”

Christopher Lloyd, Kathy Bates, Tom Hiddleston, Jacki Weaver, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Michael Fassbender, Helena Bonham Carter, Tom Wilkinson, Octavia Spencer, Lily Tomlin, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Dave Franco and Christopher Mintz-Plasse are among the actors who will appear in the shorts. La Beouf’s “Howard Cantour,” which played at Cannes in May, will receive its North American premiere at the Palm Springs fest.

The complete official line-up, which is organized into 53 programs, will be announced Saturday, June 9. All festival submissions will be available in the concurrent ShortFest Market.
