ShowWest ShowCase Shows Indies

by Mark RabinowitzAt its 1998 convention at Bally's Hotel in Las Vegas, ShowWest is gearingup to present the inaugural ShowWest ShowCase "An Evening of IndependentFilm," on Monday, March 9th as the convention's opening night program. ShowWest's exhibitor committee is currently in the process of selecting films,with the final number set to be in the mid-single digits. The films arebeing chosen not simply on their artistic merits, but also for theirindie/mainstream crossover potential and for their box office potential. Inthe past several years, independent film has become a large part of theannual global box office and awards ceremonies, with several 1997 AcademyAwards going to indies, and nominations going to many more. In a preparedstatement, ShowWest President Daniel Wheatcroft said, "ShowWest is where'new' Hollywood meets 'old' Hollywood, and these screenings reflect therealities of the motion picture business where independent film is moreimportant than ever. We look forward to this event becoming an importantannual forum for independent film."The screenings are set for 6pm and 9pm, with a reception in between forShowWest delegates to meet with representatives of independent andquasi-independent distributors such as: Miramax, Sony Pictures Classics,Live Entertainment, Strand Releasing, New Yorker Films, OverseasFilmgroup/First Look Pictures and Artificial Eye Film Company. Screeningsare to take place at General Cinema's new Orleans 12 in the Orleans Hotel.
