“A Single Man” To Close AFI Fest

Tom Ford’s “A Single Man” will close the 2009 AFI Fest, festival organizers announced today. The film, an adaptation of Christopher Isherwood’s novel about a gay college professor (played by Colin Firth) coping with the death of his partner, is the fashion designer’s directorial debut. This will mark the US premiere of the film, which has screened at Venice and Toronto.

“It is exciting to champion a talented artist like Tom Ford as he moves beyond the boundaries of one medium into another,” said said AFI Fest Artistic Director Rose Kuo in a statement. “In ‘A Single Man,’ he delivers an elegant and beautiful personal story that will resonate with all audience members.”

The Centerpiece Screening Gala presentation will be Terry Gilliam’s fantasy, “The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus,” starring Christopher Plummer, Tom Waits, Johnny Depp, Jude Law, Colin Farrell and Heath Ledger in his final role. Plummer, along with actor Viggo Mortensen whose latest film, “The Road,” is also screening at the festival, will be honored with a career tribute by this year’s AFI Fest.

Among the other selections screening at the festival, which kicks off October October 30 in Los Angeles with the North American premiere of Wes Anderson’s “The Fantastic Mr. Fox,”  are Lee Daniels’ “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire,” Harmony Korine’s “Trash Humpers,” Jacques Audiard’s “A Prophet,” Corneliu Porumboiu’s “Police, Adjective,” and Bong Joon-ho’s “Mother.”
