Slamdance Still On Track; Director Baxter Discusses Plans

by Eugene Hernandez

In a conversation with indieWIRE yesterday, Slamdance Film
Festival Director Peter Baxter discussed his new role with the festival,
plans for the event's future, and the departure of the festival's
founder Jon Fitzgerald.

"Slamdance is forging ahead," Baxter stated, during a telephone call
yesterday, "nothing has changed." Discussing former Slamdance Executive
Director Jon Fitzgerald's exit to head the AFI Los Angeles International
Film Festival, Baxter said, "We're very supportive of Jon in his new
move."

Asked about plans for the 1998 Slamdance Film Festival, Baxter revealed
that organizers are working towards again holding the event in Park
City. Yet, he admitted that a final decision has not yet been made.
While a Park City Slamdance in 1998 seems likely, Baxter added that,
"sooner or later we will be moving (the festival)." He confirmed that
changes in both the timing and locale for the event are under discussion,
with a decision expected in about a month.

Despite the potential changes, Baxter explained that the festival's
focus will not be altered. He reinforced that the "main purpose (of the
festival) is to expose new filmmakers."

With that in mind, he stated that Slamdance is currently holding its
second screenplay competition. Six finalists will be selected, and three
prize winners will receive cash awards and exposure to an agency and
studio. Slamdance's inaugural screenplay competition received over 1,000
submissions, the early deadline for entries is May 5th and the final
deadline is July 28, 1997.
