“Slumdog” Leads New York Film Critics Online

by Peter Knegt (December 15, 2008)

Danny Boyle’s “Slumdog Millionaire” won both picture and best director (an award Boyle shared with the film’s mysterious “co-director,” Loveleen Tandan) from the New York Film Critics’ Online’s annual awards. The film also took awards for best score, best cinematography and best screenplay. The acting awards looked familiar, with Sally Hawkins, Sean Penn, Penelope Cruz and Heath Ledger once again winning in their respective categories, a repeat of nearly every critics’ announcement thus far. Other awards included “4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days for best foreign language film, “Man on Wire” for best documentary, “WALL-E” for best animated feature, “In Bruges”‘s Martin McDonagh for best directorial debut, and a second award for Sally Hawkins, this time for best breakout performance. The cast of “Milk” won for best ensemble performance, while the film also was on the awards’ alphabetically listed top ten, which also included “Che,” “A Christmas Tale,” “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” “The Dark Knight,” “Happy-Go-Lucky,” “Rachel Getting Married,” “Slumdog Millionaire,” “WALL-E” and “The Wrestler.”
