Strand Releasing has acquired all US rights to Carol Morley’s critically acclaimed documentary DREAMS OF A LIFE from Entertainment One (“eOne”).
The deal was done between Jon Gerrans of Strand Releasing and Charlotte Mickie, Executive Vice President of eone films International.
Nobody noticed when thirty-eight year old Joyce Vincent died in her apartment above a shopping mall in North London in 2003. When her skeleton was discovered three years later, her heating and her television were still on. Newspaper reports offered few details of Joyce’s life- not even a photograph. Who was Joyce Vincent? And how could this happen to someone in our day and age?
DREAMS OF A LIFE is Morley’s quest to discover who Joyce was and how she came to be so forgotten.
Morley came to prominence with her documentary The Alcohol Years, a BAFTA nominated, Grierson awarded film that was later released on DVD to critical acclaim. The film masqueraded as an autobiography but became as much about the people in it as Morley herself. She studied fine art film at Central St. Martins in London and makes films that challenge, in different ways, how stories are told and which often cross the boundaries between fact and fiction. Her themes explore ideas around class, place, memory and girlhood and are often inspired by newspaper stories. Her films have been on release in cinemas and also shown at major international festivals, and received many international broadcasts, including The Sundance Channel.
“I knew from the moment I read the anonymous story in the newspaper that I was going to make a film about Joyce Vincent, I could not let her remain forgotten,” said Morley.
“We’re thrilled to be working on this innovative documentary, I hope it finds the same critical response it received in its UK opening,” said Marcus Hu of Strand Releasing. The film screened at this year’s edition of SXSW.
Strand plans for an August 3rd opening.
DREAMS OF A LIFE is presented by Film4 and UK Film Council in association with Shoot for the Moon with the participation of Bord Scannán na hÉireann / Irish Film Board and is an A Cannon and Morley Production in association with Soho Moon Pictures.
