Strand Eyes Techine's "The Witnesses" for U.S.

Strand Releasing has acquired all U.S. rights to Andre Techine's "The Witnesses," the company announced Friday. Jon Gerrans from Strand concluded the deal with UGC International's Eva Diederix and is slated for a late autumn nationwide release. The film, which will have its North American premiere at Frameline's 31st San Francisco International LGBT Film Festival as its opening film, deals with a group of friends and lovers who confront the first outbreak of AIDS in 1984 Paris. The film stars Michel Blanc as a physician and Emmanuelle Beart and Sami Bouajila as a couple whose lives become entertwined as they meet a young man who becomes the center of their attentions. The film had its international debut screening in the main competition at this year's Berlin International Film Festival. Strand previously released Techine's "Wild Reeds" in 1994. [Brian Brooks]
